Although the above statement may seem like common sense I have, on many occasions, been in bars and pubs where the bar stool was the wrong size for the bar or table at which I sat.

Wood Counter Height Stools

Many proprietors spend a lot of time and energy on the look and feel of the bar's environment but fail to look seriously at how comfortable the customers will be when seated.

For instance if you have a bar counter that is 46" then the most appropriate stool would be 34". A quick rule-of-thumb is to have a 9-13" gap between the seat and the counter. This will give a very comfortable experience to the customer and have the average person in an ideal position at the bar.

For a traditional pub or tavern with a 46" bar counter I would recommend a high-back wood style 34" stool with a foot rest. This would provide maximum comfort with that added authentic look and feel.

Cafe stools

For a cafe it is always best to have metal stools or chairs as opposed to plastic. Plastic has a cheap look and feel to it whereas metal lends to both modern and traditional eating environments.

They come in many different styles and designs and can produce a real European flavour to any dining area.

In addition metal stools or chairs can be used both inside and in an outside seated area. I have been in expensive coffee houses where the exterior eating area has mirrored the inside and this allows you to enjoy the feel of the inside environment while enjoying the sun.

Cocktail stools

For those of you interested in the more up-market approach, a stainless steel or aluminum stool, with a circular ringed footrest, is a must for all cocktail bar lovers. These bar stools blend into almost any surroundings. With a young clientele, as the main customer base, this environment can be fast paced and the seating arrangements can change over the space of a night.

In such situations, when bartenders often need to alter the pub arrangements in order to facilitate customer requirements, it is essential to have both a light-weight and durable stool.

The aluminum bar stool is ideal for such a task, as is lightweight stainless steel. These stools are not only remarkably light and therefore easy to maneuver, in compact environments, but they are also exceptionally durable, easy to clean and can be found at very reasonable prices.

Lounge

Lounges are traditionally used for recreational socialising with friends and establishments tend to create a relaxed atmosphere which allows easy conversation. With this in mind the seating arrangements should reflect this and it is therefore crucial to think of the comfort of the customer.

Upholstered stools and chairs are essential for creating the correct ambiance and level of comfort to meet the customer requirements. Even if the environment reflects a more traditional feel, as do some Irish bars, wooden stools with padded seats in no way detract from the feel of the surroundings.

Small stools

As well as the standard 36" bar stool, which is the average height for an average bar counter, all bars from local taverns to up-market cocktail lounges have additional seating areas. Obviously, the standard size of bar stool would be inappropriate for such a bar table or lounge area.

Therefore proprietors should always have a stock of smaller stools for the lounge and seated area in the public bar. Usually, in most cases, only a 20" stool would be required to meet the comfortable table height. A good rule-rule-thumb for a table stool would be to give approximately 6" between the seat and table surface.

Kitchen stools

Whether its a modern breakfast bar you have or a traditional pine table, kitchen stools can be ideal for your seating requirements. Traditional chairs or bar stools like those pictured below can give that warm feeling that you had whenever you where in your mama's kitchen. Alternatively a metal, chrome or aluminum look can add sleek and sophistication to any modern kitchen.

As with the pub stools the height of the counter should be considered prior to purchasing any stools or chairs. The standard breakfast bar is usually 36" which would suggest that you use a 30" stool.

When considering a breakfast bar the rule-of-thumb is to have a 6-10" gap between the counter and the seat to derive maximum comfort. However, if you have traditional seating arrangements around a table leave a 6" gap.

What to Do With a Small Kitchen

I'm going to make the assumption that if you're dealing with a small kitchen, you're in an apartment-sized dwelling and you don't have to worry about entertaining very often - or entertaining large crowds.

It's a challenge, but here are a few ideas that will help. If you have a rectangular space with a minimum of 7 ft in the shorter dimension, the most efficient layout is that of a "galley kitchen".

That's where 2 runs of cabinets face each other and there are no corner cabinets.
If your overall width is 7 feet, this will leave a 3 foot wide work space between the cabinets.

Obviously, use as much height as you can and use light colors so that the space won't seem as small as it is. One run of wall cabinets (the one without the cook top) should have glass doors instead of solid ones. This means the stuff inside those cabinets will have to be kept pretty neat.

You could use open shelving (without any doors) as well, but then you have a lot of extra dusting to do. Use compact appliances (mini refrigerator, compact dishwasher). Since there are only 1 or 2 people living in your home, you don't need anything bigger.

Get a drop-in cook top instead of a range; and get a microwave/convection combination - forget about a standard oven. When will you need it? Retain a decent size sink however. Small sinks create stress.

If you have a layout that allows you to have a table in the room, use a glass top. You can also find chairs that are minimal in size - many have open backs. This combination will help in making the room seem larger than it really is.

Another option is a drop leaf table that you can fold away. Mirrors, or other reflective materials, on the backsplashes will give added depth. But don't put mirrors directly behind the cook top or you'll be cleaning it every day. Use counter top racks for spices and large utensils so you don't have to use valuable storage space for these items.

Use a combination of general lighting and task lighting (lighting that aims directly where you'll be working). Under cabinet lighting will give you the task lighting you need without taking up space. Don't overdo it (too much glare), but don't under light either. The idea is to make the space comfortable for you.

If there is a nearby door to a closet or basement, you can attach a rack to the inside of the door, upon which you can hang pots, pans and other small utensils. This will effectively expand your kitchen beyond it's walls when you're not using it.

If you're putting a new floor down, use a tile pattern (or real tiles if you wish) and lay them in a diagonal pattern. This makes the room seem larger.

Similarly, running the grain of the cabinets horizontally instead of vertically will also fool the eye into thinking the space is larger. However, this assumes you're using custom cabinets, and you want a wood grain instead of a color. If you use a solid color, make it light - and nothing that creates glare. You're ready. Have a great time remodeling your kitchen.

Play food can be used to teach about different foods and nutrition. Also social skills can be practiced with serving food and play eating together. What sort of play kitchen do you want? Children's kitchens range from very small toy kitchens to very large and feature full. You can find a single unit kids kitchen, which include many appliances, to multi-piece kitchen play sets with individual appliances. Choosing a play kitchen set depends on the age of the child, your budget and your setting. It also depends on your personal philosophy. Where is that play kitchen made? Is it eco-friendly and made with sustainable manufacturing and fair business practices.

What kinds of play kitchens are available?

Single Unit Kitchens - These play kitchens include many appliances such as a stove, oven, microwave and sink in one unit. These units have a "front" and "back", so that they can be placed against a wall. Typically this style of toy kitchen is either a "assembly-required" wooden kitchen or it is made from molded plastic. A typical large, self-assemble wooden kitchen measures about four feet long, four feet tall, and about two feet deep.

Island Play Kitchen - These are stand-alone pretend kitchens. Children can play on all sides of these kitchens. Island play kitchens also feature various combinations of sink, stove, ovens and microwaves. Toddler kitchens are typically this style.

Complete Kitchen Play Sets - We are talking about a multi-appliance set here. There are separate toy stoves, toy refrigerators, toy microwaves, toy sinks, and toy dishwashers.

Table Top Toy Kitchens - These are small, typically "two burner" stoves, that are designed with portability in mind. These pretend kitchens can be moved from room to room and be used on a table, shelf or even the floor.

Natural wooden kitchens - These kitchens are made from solid wood and not particle board. Many of the "assembly-required" are made from laminated particle board and are still considered wood by the manufacturer. The natural wooden kitchens are typically made from spruce, pine or cedar. Many of these designs are more abstract in nature. That is they do not offer realistic detail; however, there is no mistaking that these are play kitchens. They usually combine a sink and stove and have moving parts. It is just that the details are left to the child's imagination.

Is my child old enough?

In a word, yes. Well, let's qualify that. Some kitchens also have small parts that may come off and pose a choking hazard for a younger child, so your child should be at least three years old. With a small child it is tempting to get a very small kitchen play set. However, a busy preschooler can quickly out grow the small toy kitchen. On the other hand, if you get a large play kitchen, it might overwhelm a younger toddler. You have to know your child, but you want to plan for growth.

A smaller child may not be able to reach the upper appliances on a large single unit play kitchen. On other units, the stove top or counter height may be too tall for the child to effectively play with the toy kitchen unit. Your choices are three-fold: buy a smaller kids kitchen and patiently wait until your child grows taller. Or, get a little step stool or bench, just like the one you use in their bathroom, to help the child reach everywhere in their kitchen.

Remember, children play with their kitchens for many years, so you probably want to buy a play kitchen as soon as you can and plan for growth.

From what material should the toy kitchen be made?

Wooden play kitchens are sturdy, durable and last for many years. They are less likely to crack, fade or warp as they age. However, assembly may be a challenge if it is a flat-packed unit. Wood makes a sturdy childrens kitchen, but sturdy means heavier and harder to move.

Plastic play kitchens are typically smaller and lighter than their wooden counterparts. They are easier to clean too. However, if the plastic kids kitchen is designed as a wall unit, as opposed to a free standing unit, it could be a tip-over hazard. And just because it is made from plastic, it does not necessarily mean it is cheaper. Nice plastic full featured children's kitchens may be more expensive than many nice wooden play kitchens.

Eco-friendly? Some of the wooden play kitchen manufacturers use sustainable harvesting and use no finish, natural finishes, or low V.O.C water based finishes.

Where are you going to put the play kitchen in your home?

A lot of homes do not have the area to accommodate a large toy kitchen or multi-unit kitchen play set. If you have a play room, multi-unit pretend kitchen set may work for you. If you have the wall space, then a combination single-unit kids kitchen will work. Otherwise consider a play kitchen island or table top toy kitchen.

Once you have decided where the kids kitchen will go, you need to look at the decor of the room. Kitchens come in all sorts of colors, shapes, and patterns, so you should be able to find something that matches or least does not clash with the room.

How long are you going to keep the kitchen?

If your play kitchen is going to hang around for a year or two and then head off to a new home, there's probably no need for a large, heavy, elaborate kitchen. On the other hand, if you intend to keep the kitchen for five or six years or more, you should get a sturdy wooden one that isn't going to fade or crack with time. If the kitchen is to be passed down through a progression of children and perhaps generations of children, a handcrafted, heirloom quality wooden kitchen would fit the bill. Where are you going to put the all the play kitchen accessories? Play kitchens beget play kitchen accessories. There are all sorts of play kitchen toys: pots and pans, small appliances, ovenware, aprons, kitchen towels, utensils, and pretend play food. Some play kitchen sets have more storage than other kitchen play sets. You may want to take that into consideration.

So how are you going to choose?

Decide if your child is ready. You can wait a while if you like. Determine your budget - How much do you want to spend? Kitchens with more features are generally more expensive. Determine how long are you going to keep it - Sturdy wooden kitchens will last longer. Find a location - Do you have a spot in the house for that large kitchen? And how is it going to look? You need to decide. Determine the storage needs - Is there enough storage for all the play kitchen accessories? (There's never enough :)
